Backlog Game Reviews 11: Megaman The Wily Wars / Rockman Megaworld part 4 (Sega Genesis / Megadrive)
Hey there, and welcome to Backlog Game
Reviews. This will be the last review for Megaman The Wily Wars. This is going
to be another mini review, and this time I'll be looking at the bonus game
that's unlocked after completing Megaman 1-3. What kind of reward do you get
for completing those 3 games? Let's find out!
The name of this game is Wily Tower. It takes
place after Dr.Wily's defeat in Megaman 3. In one final attempt to defeat Megaman
Dr.Wily creates 3 robots specifically for destroying him. He sets the robots loose on the world and sends a challenge out to Megaman to try and stop him. In the Japanese version,
these three robots are called the Megaworld Corps. And in the English version, they're called
the Genesis Unit.

It's not much of a story, but considering that
this is just a bonus game it's not bad. As for the gameplay, it's just like
Megaman 1-3 but with one major difference.
The boss select screen. |
In this game, you have access to all of the
special weapons from Megaman 1-3. After selecting a stage you're allowed to
choose up to 8 weapons to take into battle. You're also able to choose 3
support items. The Magnet beam from Megaman 1. Item Number 1,2, and 3 from
Megaman 2. Rush Jet, Rush coil, and Rush Marine from Megaman 3. They're all at
your disposal.

The option to pick any weapon or support item
makes Wily Tower a lot of fun to play. Having access to all of these
weapons makes Megaman feel incredibly powerful. And with the right mix of
support items, you'll be ready for any challenge that the game throws at you.
The bosses this time around have multiple weaknesses. Some of the weakness
don't make any sense, but you'll have a high chance of picking the right weapon.

Because there are only 3 bosses there aren't
as many stages to play through. But the stages that Wily Tower does have to
offer are all great. All of the enemies from Megaman 1-3 are working together
this time. With so many different enemy types Wily tower differently isn't
lacking variety. The platforming isn't all that difficult but it's not easy
either. The difficulty strikes a pretty good balance.
The boss fights are probably the
most unique I've seen from a Megaman game so far. Each robot master has a
special gimmick that sets them apart from other robot masters. A good example
would be Hyper Storm H. Probably the easiest boss of the trio. He has two life
bars instead of just one.

Needless to say, the bosses were a lot of fun
to fight, and all of the stages were a blast to play. I loved the ability to
mix and match all of the special weapons from the other 3 games. Wily Tower is
a great reward for beating Megaman 1-3 and a great way to end this compilation.
If you're a Megaman fan or a fan of action platformers give The Wily Wars a try
if you get a chance. It suffers from slow down at times and the controls are a
little awkward, but it's a good game.
And that's all I have to say about The Wily
Wars. I had a lot of fun playing it. I recommend playing it someday if you can.
Thank you for reading. Next time I'll be reviewing a game on the Sega Saturn. I
hope to see you again at Backlog Game Reviews.
